Derek Hebert is the Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Head for The Academy. In these roles, Mr. Hebert directs the Academy Bands from 5th to 12th grades as well as 5th grade and Chamber Orchestras. He also serves the K-12 Performing Arts department, striving to provide the best performance opportunities for Academy students.
Under his direction, Academy instrumental ensembles have earned superior and gold ratings at numerous festivals, Academy students have earned scholarships to pursue music beyond high school, musicians have had numerous opportunities for expression and to show off their talents and abilities, and multiple students have auditioned and been accepted into the prestigious Colorado All-State ensembles. In the spring of 2017, the Academy Wind Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra have been selected to perform at the Disneyland Music Festival.
Mr. Hebert grew up along the gulf coast of Louisiana, and in 2006, traded in the Cajun bayous for the Colorado mountains. Outside of The Academy, Mr. Hebert is also the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of a Denver-based adult community band. In his free time, he enjoys exploring all the Colorado outdoors has to offer, from hiking to skiing and biking. He is still an avid trombone player, and loves all things tech.
Mr. Hebert is an honors graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder in Music Education and is in his final year pursing his Masters in Music Education at Colorado State University. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Colorado Music Educators Association, American String Teachers Association, Colorado Bandmasters Association, and the International Trombone Association.
